In the theatrical cut, this scene arrives out of nowhere. One second Batman is about to impale Superman; the next, he is best friends with him. It feels unearned and silly.
The theatrical cut left viewers wondering how Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) orchestrated his scheme. The extended version explicitly shows Luthor manipulating the government and framing Superman for the deaths in the African desert, making his manipulation of Batman more believable.
