The film opens in a provincial Russian town, where 12-year-old Lena Bessoltseva (Kristina Orbakaite) moves in with her eccentric grandfather Nikolay (Yuri Nikulin), a quiet collector of paintings. On her first day at a new school, an awkward and clumsy fall earns her the cruel nickname "Baidyklė" (Scarecrow) from her classmates. The class is led by the popular and charismatic boy, Dima Somov, with whom Lena quickly develops a crush. This innocent affection upsets the established social order, particularly angering Shmakova, who was previously the center of male attention in the class.
