In the late spring of 1980, the disco era was facing a brutal cultural backlash. The "Disco Demolition Night" of 1979 had left the genre scarred, and radio stations were rapidly pivoting to rock and new wave. Yet, pulsing out of Minneapolis, Minnesota—a city far removed from the disco hubs of New York and Los Angeles—came a track that defied the funeral march of dance music.
